EDITORIAL PHOTOGRAPHER

PORTRAIT / NARRATIVE / DOCUMENTARY / FEATURES

Deliberate, engaged and environment-led. Portrait, narrative and editorial photography shaped by nuance and humanity.

Whether working in studio or on location, across Scotland, the UK or internationally, Jo creates editorial photography with clarity, restraint and environmental charge. Her portraits are shaped around the subject rather than imposed onto them.

Jo delivers images with enough control to serve the brief and enough instinct to hold attention.

Intentional portraiture and narrative collections bursting with variety, context and control.

Editorial photography rarely works in single images alone. The full project gives the work its shape — the quieter frames, the shifts in expression, the relationship between subject and setting, and the visual rhythm that sits behind the final selection.

What is editorial photography in a commissioning context?

Editorial photography is photography created to support a story, subject or point of view. It can include portraiture, documentary coverage, feature photography, celebrity portraits, location-led stories and promotional editorial imagery for print and digital use. The aim is not simply to make someone look good, but to create images that give the story character, context and visual authority.

Do you produce editorial portraits for magazines, features and digital publishing?

Yes. Jo creates editorial portraits for publications, editors, agencies and commissioning teams, including magazine features, interview portraits, author portraits, artist portraits, founder portraits and digital editorial content. The work is shaped around the subject, the setting and the tone of the piece, with enough control to serve the brief and enough instinct to hold attention.

Can you photograph public figures, performers or recognisable subjects for publication?

Yes. Jo works with public figures, performers, writers, artists, business leaders and other recognisable subjects who may have limited time, strong expectations or existing public visibility. The approach is calm, direct and responsive, creating portraits that feel considered, characterful and appropriate for editorial use.

Do you shoot documentary-style editorial stories?

Yes. Jo produces documentary and narrative editorial photography for stories that need more than a formal portrait. This can include people at work, subjects in their own environment, place-based features, cultural stories, lifestyle-led editorial and commissioned reportage where the relationship between person, setting and story matters.

How do you direct editorial portraits without making them feel over-managed?

Direction depends on the subject and the story. Some portraits need structure, stillness and restraint; others need movement, humour, tension or a more observational approach. Jo works with the person in front of the camera, the available environment and the intended use of the images, allowing the portrait to feel deliberate without becoming forced.

Can you create a wider editorial image set rather than one final portrait?

Yes. Editorial commissions often need a sequence of images: lead portraits, alternative crops, environmental frames, details, documentary moments and supporting images for print, web, social and syndication. Jo creates connected editorial image sets that give editors, art directors and picture teams range without losing visual coherence.

Do you work as an editorial photographer in Edinburgh, London and / or internationally?

Yes. Jo works from bases in Edinburgh and London, producing editorial photography across Scotland, the UK and internationally. This supports publications, agencies and commissioning teams that need portrait, documentary and feature photography across different locations, subjects and production conditions.
